The classic custom made shoe is a handmade shoe according to the individual client’s vision and his foot measurements, it is therefore provided with an aura of “better shoes” compared to normal shoes. Objectively speaking, this view is compared with a high-quality retail shoe unfounded. Comparable quality very good men’s clothes shoes are approximately a retail price of 300 € (in 2008) and are in various sizes and last shapes are offered, so expect to here as good a fit like a custom made shoe (from about 1200 €). The processing quality of a custom-made shoes is usually no better than that of a shoe assembly of the upper class because, for example, a running hand-stitching machine must not be more than prepared. Well known bespoke shoemaker have become rare in Europe. A recognized high standard can be found mostly where competition is also relevant: in London (Amesbury, Cleverley, John Lobb), Paris (Aubercy, Berluti), Vienna (Bálint, Maftei, Materna, Scheer), but also in Rome (Gatto ) or Milan (Bestetti). Germany today has known a few bespoke shoemaker, most shops have only existed a few years.
By the middle of the 19th Century there were almost exclusively made shoes because the shoes were usually produced by the shoemaker for the customer according to his wishes.
